General Information Vaalbos is a blend of three eco- systems;
keroo, Kalahari thornveld and grassveld. Kalahari thornveld dominates the park. The park is replete with various kinds of animal species and bird
species.
The park is located in the alluvial diamond diggings and was established in 1986. it covers an area of 23,000 ha.
The park derives
its name from a plant species that is dominant in the park, known as the camphor bush. It is conveniently located along the Vaal River where animals can be
found cooling down. Currently vaalbos is home to the largest population of roan antelope in South Africa.
Getting
There Vaalbos is located in the northern cape. It is 20km west of Barkley West and 52km from Kimberly. In the latter, there is an international
airport. Close to the park is a historic mining village called Sydney-On-Vaal with many original Victorian buildings.
Main Attraction
The park has a record of approximately
16 large mammals and 180 bird species. Along the Vaal River the black rhino, white rhino, buffalo, eland, giraffe, red hartebeest, tsessebe can be observed
grazing the lush green grass. The roan antelope is quite popular in the par as well.
Bird watching is also a pleasure in due to the abundance in
variety. Along the river Vaal is a beautiful picnic site and a barbeque site that are very popular amongst visitors. The picnic site is perfect for bird
watching opportunities. Bird species include fish eagle, martial eagle and white- backed vulture.
Accommodation in the park is of various kinds to
