Tour Summary:
Mount Meru is one of Africa’s most beautiful volcanoes, and the second highest mountain in Tanzania at 4,566m, the fifth highest in Africa. The mountain is located within Arusha National Park, Tanzania’s gem. This prime location gives walkers the opportunity to spot some of the birds and wildlife that inhabit the area. One of the best things about climbing Mount Meru is the chance of a phenomenal view of Mount Kilimanjaro. Meru is equally spectacular, with slopes that rise up at incredibly steep angles. The ascend is quite steep, the route to the summit passes over streams, through parkland, montane forest, a giant heather zone and moorland. The summit is reached by a narrow, barren ridge, which provides stunning views of the Ash Cone lying several thousand feet below in the crater. Meru is equally spectacular, with slopes that rise up at incredibly steep angles.

Itinerary:
DAY 1: Arusha/Mariakamba Hut
After breakfast transfer to Momella gate to begin the Climbing of Mt. Meru. After park entrance formalities, we begin our hike, guided by a park ranger. Hike for the few hours to Mariakamba Hut at 8,500 ft. Three hours walk gets you to the floor of the Meru Crater. The track passes open grassland, providing an opportunity to see buffalo, warthogs and other grazers. The trail continues as a steady climb through montane forest. Lunch will be served near a giant Fig Tree arch. After lunch, the route continues through less dense forest, where there are abundance of birds and black and white colobus monkeys.

Dinner and Overnight at Miriakamba Hut.

DAY 2: Miriakamba Hut
After breakfast Climb to Saddle Hut which will take about three hours along the steep Saddle walls to Saddle Hut. The walk from Miriakamba Hut to the saddle below Little Meru is a short day but a steep climb. Ascend through lush montane forest to reach the halfway point of Elephant Ridge. From here enjoy excellent views of the summit ridge and across the crater floor. The path continues through giant heather and other fascinating moorland vegetation to reach Saddle Hut (3,570 m), where lunch is will be Served. After lunch, afternoon is free to relax and to enjoy the views. The more energetic can make the short climb to the nearby summit of Little Meru (3,820 m) for stunning views just before sunset before heading back to Saddle Hut for dinner. This will also be part of more acclimatization.

Dinner and Overnight at Saddle Hut.

DAY 3: Saddle Hut

After an early breakfast, around 3.30am, we begin the hike to Mount Meru’s summit, Socialist Peak. We start off the morning with a steep climb up to Rhino Point (3,800m), reaching the top of Rhino around sunrise. While descending we cross a small rock bridge, and then continue going up and down over the mix of rocky and sandy trail. We continue along the trail climbing through sand. We reach the crater rim with sunrise and begin the hike around the crater wall to the peak of Meru. The walk has been said to be both exhilarating and nerve wracking, the breathtaking sunrise over Kilimanjaro makes it all worthwhile.

The views are stunning: the cliffs of the Crater rim, the Ash Cone rising from the Crater floor, Kilimanjaro floating on the morning clouds and west towards the Rift Valley if the weather is clear. The summit of Socialist Peak (4,566 m.) is an hour further on a good but steep path. The hike to the summit is slow-going due to the sandy trail conditions, high winds and altitude. We reach the summit early morning, have some time to snack, take photos and relax before making our way back down to Saddle Hut. The route back to Rhino Point in the morning light, on a narrow ridge between the sloping outer wall of the crater and the sheer cliffs of the inner wall, is one of the most dramatic and exhilarating walks in Africa. We reach Saddle Hut at around noon for lunch. After lunch, hike down to Mariakamba Hut.

Dinner and Overnight at Miriakamba Hut.
