Lake Nakuru is one of the Rift Valley soda lakes and lies to the south of Nakuru, which loosely translated means "Dusty Place" in the Maasai Language. The lake is home to thousands of pink flamingoes and pelicans.
Gazetted as a bird sanctuary in 1960 and then upgraded to a National Park 8 years later, Lake Nakuru National park is also home to the colobus monkeys and black rhinos.
The lake is bordered by Menengai crater to the north, the Bahati hills to the North East, the lion hill ranges to the East, eburu crater to the South and the mau escarpment to the West.
