Day-by-Day Programme

This whirlwind excursion takes you out into the hippo-heavy rivers and open savannahs of Uganda before backtracking into the pristine rainforest in search of mountain gorillas and other fascinating wildlife.

Day 1: Kampala - Lake Mburo National Park

Making the most of our time in Uganda, we've packed the trip with plenty of photo ops: a stop at the Equator, the Western Rift Valley, and ancient volcanic formations are just a few of the treats for the eyes and camera lens. We head to Lake Mburo National Park. Enjoy the boat ride on Lake Mburo and get quite close to crocs and hippos.Birdwatchers will enjoy the more than 250 species of birds found in Lake Mburo including Papyrus Gonolek, Brown faced Lapwing. Carruther's Cisticola, the extraordinary White winged Warbler and Bare-Faced-Go- Away bird.

Enjoy evening game drive along the Lakeshore track. With its own system of game trails and cleared walkways the "Kigambara Loop" offers interesting guided lakeside walks. Find here herds of zebra, Cape buffalo and eland. Oribi and topi are easily approached.

Overnight Mihingo Safari Lodge.

Day 2: Lake Mburo National Park - Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

After breakfast we shall proceed for a game drive or a safari walk under the escort of an armed ranger. The leisurely pace of a walking safari provides excellent opportunities for the keen photographer. The Kopjes are particularly interesting and camouflage kilpspringers and topis. It is quite amusing to see zebras grazing alongside the long horned Ankore Cattle in this area peaceably.

Drive through the "Switzerland of Africa" area known as the Kigezi Highlands with its terraced hillside and winding roads to Bwindi.

Overnight Buhoma Lodge.

Day 3: Gorilla trek

Rise with the sun; today we penetrate the impenetrable! Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is the world's premier destination for spotting mountain gorillas and the park's lush flora shelters approximately half of the world's dwindling population. As we pick our way through the mud and crawl over mossy rocks, we grow ever closer to these massive creatures, the world's largest primates.

Suddenly, the brush parts and you have your very first gorilla encounter: a face-to-face meeting with these critically endangered mammals! After our time with the gorillas, our guides point out more of Bwindi's natural charms, which include rare golden monkeys, buffalos, elephants, black-fronted duikers, bushbucks, leopards, and giant forest hogs.

Dinner and overnight at Buhoma Lodge.

Day 4: Bwindi - Queen Elizabeth National Park

We proceed to Queen Elizabeth National Park via the Ishasha sector. An afternoon river cruise is the perfect introduction to the exotic wildlife of Africa. Our boat zigzags through the Kazinga Channel, not to avoid wayward logs or lily pads, but to evade the hulking, grey forms of the country's densest hippo population. These imposing mammals may seem merry, with their long eyelashes and toothsome grins, but they are one of Africa's most aggressive and dangerous animals – a close second to the famed Big Five! More than 550 bird species also live at Lake Edward, making today the perfect introduction to Uganda's incredible diversity.

Overnight Mweya Safari Lodge.

Day 5: Queen Elizabeth - Kampala

Today's morning game drive takes you deep into the park's breath-taking habitats: ancient volcanoes, tropical forests, lively swamps, grassy savannah, crater lakes and freshwater rivers. Against a backdrop of the statuesque Rwenzori Mountain Range, animal profiles parade before your eyes: elephants, leopards, cape buffalo, and lions go toe-to-toe with giant forest hog, defassa waterbuck, Uganda Kob, Topi and bush buck.

Drive back to Kampala stopping at the Mpigi Royal Drum Makers en route where you will able to watch the ceremonial drums being crafted using methods passed down through generations. There will also be time to stop at the equator for photographs. We'll arrive in the evening to connect our flights back home or have an overnight in the capital city.
