Day-by-Day Programme

Answer the challenge from one of Africa's ten tallest mountains, the mighty Mount Meru. For four days you'll traverse craggy cliffs and dense rainforest, scaling sandy trails and rocky mountainside to reach Socialist Peak at 14,980 feet (4,566 metres).

Day 1: Arusha - Miriakamba Hut

Clouds gather around the impressive mountain, shielding its base and highlighting the near-perfect cone. Mount Meru, one of Africa's ten highest mountains, issues its challenge: Can you conquer my slopes? In answer, we make the quick trip from Arusha to the base of the mountain. Accompanied by a park ranger, we climb the ashen slopes of this active stratovolcano, passing through montane forest where massive buffalo and warthogs graze, their calm offset by the antics of black and white colobus monkeys. At 8,500 feet (2,591 metres), Mariakamba Hut greets us.

Dinner and overnight at Miriakamba Hut.

Day 2: Miriakamba - Saddle Hut

The day dawns bright for our three-hour trek through deep forest. Birdsong is our soundtrack for today, accompanying the menagerie of Mt Meru's forest animals: dik-dik, bush buck, blue monkeys, colobus monkeys, water buffalo, giraffe, warthog, and the occasional hyena or elephant.

There is so much to see, your eyes always seem to wander from the trail. Pay attention though: the short climb to Little Meru is steep and challenging. Lush montane forest parts at Elephant Ridge, making way for breath-taking vistas of the crater floor and summit ridge. Enjoy lunch with a view at Saddle Hut, which overlooks the moorlands, before our final climb to the summit of Little Meru (12,530 feet/3820 metres) for incredible photo ops of heart-stopping panoramas. Descend back to Saddle Hut in time for dinner in the Kilimanjaro sunset.

Dinner and overnight at Saddle Hut.

Day 3: Saddle Hut - Miriakamba Hut

You emerge from the warmth of your sleeping bag to the pre-dawn chill of Mount Meru. At 3:30 a.m., there is not even the faintest glow of sun over the horizon. Instead, the moon's ghostly glow and the twinkling lights from millions of stars will light our way up the mountain. Grab your trekking poles and begin the rocky ascent to Rhino Point (12,457 feet/3,800 metres) for an incredible sunrise that emerges from the belly of the towering mountain. A stony bridge connects rocky terrain with sandy landscapes, and we push up, up, up.

On a clear day, these views are unparalleled: Mount Kilimanjaro looms in the distance, impressive and imposing even from afar. The Ash Cone erupts from the crater floor, the crater's rim fringed with craggy cliffs. The Rift Valley unfolds in a blanket of green and gold. The summit of Socialist Peak (14,980 feet/4,566 metres) is just an hour away, but the going is slow along strong gales and sandy trail. But by early morning, you will conquer the summit, the highest on Mount Meru. Congratulations!

Our trek back to Rhino Point passes through one of the most dramatic and exciting trails in Africa - especially in the dawn light - sandwiched on a narrow ridge between the sheer cliffs of the inner wall and the sloping outer ridges of the crater. At noon we arrive at Saddle Hut for lunch then afterwards descend to Mariakamba Hut.

Dinner and overnight at Miriakamba Hut.

Day 4: Miriakamba - Arusha

After breakfast, we make our final descent to Kitoto and Momella Gate to connect with our ride back to your Arusha hotel.
