Day-by-Day Programme

Explore the natural riches of the Selous Game Reserve, Mikumi National Park, and Ruaha National Park on this wild romp through southern Tanzania. Spot African elephants, hippos, tree-climbing lions, and other iconic wildlife on this incredible safari.

Day 1: Dar es Salaam - Selous Game Reserve

A winding river carves a path through distant landscape, the sole waterway amidst the parched landscapes and undulating grasses of Selous Game Reserve. The river draws slowly nearer, eventually revealed as the mighty Rufiji – and the jumping-off point for today's boat safari. Our aquatic transport meanders down the scenic river, floating past bathing hippos and toothsome crocodiles – fierce predators that only pretend to ignore our presence.

In the afternoon we take to the mighty Selous Game Reserve, a refuge four times larger than the endless Serengeti. This scenic reserve protects some of the largest animal populations in Africa, including bush elephants, African wild dog, and cape buffalo.

Dinner and overnight at Rufiji River Camp.

Day 2: Selous Game Reserve

The wind whips over the savannah, carrying with it the scent of wild game. From our open 4x4, you can almost taste the nearby presence of lions, antelope, zebras and giraffe. Suddenly, an elephant emerges from roadside bush, barrelling across the dusty path in front of our jeep. And just as the animal disappears again amidst dense brush, more of its herd appear, their thundering footfalls echoing throughout our vehicle. These are the experiences that wait on today's full-day game drive through the Selous.

Dinner and overnight at Rufiji River Camp.

Day 3: Selous Game Reserve

You reach your hand out, grazing your fingertips over sun-dried grasses. A dazzle of zebras gallop by, just yards from your hiding spot in the bush. And when you trip over a wayward acacia root, your boots kick up tiny clouds of orange dust. You are on a walking safari through the Selous Game Reserve, a wildlife walkabout that few visitors will ever experience. Together with your armed guide, you'll traverse the same paths as Africa's most prized sporting game (best months: June through October) – and will have the ground-level photos to prove it!

Dinner and overnight at Rufiji River Camp.

Day 4: Selous Game Reserve

We bump over sun-parched land, as our safari van seeks out elephant herds and bathing hippos. Your eyes scan the distant horizon, searching the sparse trees and tall grasses in search of the next exhilarating animal sighting.

Dinner and overnight at Rufiji River Camp.

Day 5: Selous Game Reserve - Mikumi National Park

A motionless lion stands proud, his mane a splendid crown, surveying his sun-drenched kingdom. Across the flat savannah lands, zebras gallop in a choreographed dance of camouflage. Giraffes tear their leafy lunch from the isolated branches that dot the Mkata River. Bush elephants fringe the river's muddy banks, slurping water as respite from the midday heat. The song of more than 400 bird species plays as background melody. And when rain falls, a lioness trades grassy terrain for the shelter of a nearby tree. This is your welcome to Mikumi National Park, home to open savannah and verdant floodplains that draw comparisons to the mighty Serengeti.

Dinner and overnight at Vuma Hill Camp.

Day 6: Mikumi National Park - Ruaha National Park

Rising mist blankets the landscape, hiding the approach of a rising sun. Our van beats a path through pre-dawn savannah en route to Ruaha National Park, a land of startling landscapes and dense animal populations. As we drive into the largest national park in Tanzania, a scenic trifecta greets us: mountains rise in the distance, making way for sun-bleached landscapes and the sparkling Great Ruaha River. This river is the park's life source, providing year-round sustenance to thirsty wildlife, including 10,000 elephants and 370 bird species, as well as leopards, lions, giraffes and gazelles.

Dinner and overnight at Ruaha River Lodge, the only lodge built on the banks of the Great Ruaha.

Day 7: Ruaha National Park

Your eyes dart left, right, behind and ahead, unsure of where to focus. Buffalo graze on the plains, their steady eyes tracking the progress of our van. A king lion perches atop a flattened termite nest, scanning the horizon for his next meal. A mother elephant urges her young calf forward. There is much to see and photograph on today's full-day safari through Ruaha National Park.

Dinner and overnight at Ruaha River Lodge.

Day 8: Ruaha National Park - Mikumi National Park

We accompany the sun on its journey west, retracing our steps back to Mikumi National Park. Dusty plains and sun-dappled savannah meet open horizons and endless blue sky. An evening game drive gifts another chance to explore the beauty of Mikumi.

Dinner and overnight at Vuma Hill Camp.

Day 9: Mikumi National Park - Dar Es Salaam

A final morning game drive is your farewell to Mikumi and southern Tanzania. After lunch, drive back to Dar es Salaam and arrive in time for afternoon flights or an overnight in the city.
