Day-by-Day Programme

Take to the Tanzanian wilds in search of Africa's most iconic wildlife, including rare sightings of the critically endangered black rhino and tree-climbing lions. The Big Five are on our list, as is the Serengeti's Great Wildebeest Migration.

Day 1: Arusha - Lake Manyara National Park

A hippo wades through a sparkling lake so thick with flamingos, its shores glint pink in the golden sunlight. Giraffes, zebras and buffalo congregate on the open plain, amidst the undulating, dry stalks of tall grasses. Lions, their eyes heavy with sleep, lounge in the trees. Our short drive has delivered us to Lake Manyara National Park, an ornithologist's paradise also famous for its elusive tree-climbing lions.

Dinner and overnight at Kirurumu Tented Lodge.

Day 2: Lake Manyara - Serengeti National Park

Your hand clutches the seat, your knuckles white with effort. It is not the bumpy ride that inspires your iron grip, but the sights outside: a leopard races through the savannah, hot on the feet of a gazelle. Or perhaps it's a mighty African elephant that has caught your attention, as she teaches her calf to bathe in the freshwater lake. And if we're lucky, we're perched on the edge of our seats because we've found one of the park's elusive and rare tree-climbing lions; Lake Manyara is one of only two places in the world where these magnificent wildcats go vertical. Add in more than 400 bird species, blue monkeys, dik-dik, hippos, impala, and other animals, and it's clear why Lake Manyara National Park is the first stop on our journey.

As impressive as this morning's game drive is, it's just the warm-up: after lunch we proceed to Serengeti National Park, one of the most famous wildlife sanctuaries in the world and home to more than three million large mammals.

Dinner and overnight at Serengeti Sopa Lodge.

Day 3: Serengeti National Park

In a word, the Serengeti is spectacular. In a world of incredible sights, the Serengeti has been named one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa and made it onto the list of Ten Natural Travel Wonders of the World. And today, we explore the Serengeti – Maasai for "Endless Plains" – home to the golden grasses, sprinkled acacia trees and dusty roads you've seen so many times, on your television screen and in your dreams.

Morning and afternoon game drives send us into this vibrant habitat, home to the largest terrestrial mammal migration in the world: The Great Migration, when 750,000 zebra and millions of wildebeest (gnu) beat a path from Tanzania's Serengeti to Kenya's Maasai Mara. These plains are also considered one of Africa's best spots to spot lion prides in their natural environment.

Dinner and overnight at Serengeti Sopa Lodge.

Day 4: Serengeti - Ngorongoro Crater

Back on the endless plains of the Serengeti, we have one main goal for our morning game drive: Africa's Big Five. These magnificent creatures are five of the continent's largest and most dangerous game, and they're the five most sought-out species in Africa. All five roam the Serengeti. Live the surreal experience of seeing African buffalo, black rhinos, bush elephants, leopards and lions, close enough to imagine their breath on your face. Other sights this morning include splendid cheetah, gazelles, African wild dogs, giraffes and approximately 500 species of bird that also reside here.

After lunch, we swap the Serengeti's dry savannah for the Olduva Gorge, a prehistoric site where famed British archaeologist Dr Louis Leaky discovered the remains of Homo habilis ("Handy man"), widely regarded as the first step on the path of human evolution. After a walk through history, and through some of the world's earliest known ancestral remains, we proceed to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and Ngorongoro Crater, the massive epicentre of a collapsed volcano.

Dinner and overnight at Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge.

Day 5: Ngorongoro Crater

You're seated on the edge of Ngorongoro Crater, your picnic lunch spread out before you. This scenic crater, Africa's "Garden of Eden" and a candidate for the New Seven Wonders of the World, is the world's largest inactive, intact, and unfilled volcanic caldera. But today's destination is about more than unparalleled views: the surrounding park is home to more than 25,000 animals, including the famed Big Five, zebras, and wildebeest.

In fact, Ngorongoro Crater welcomes almost every individual species of wildlife in East Africa, including the rare and critically endangered black rhinoceros. And this startling diversity is our goal for today's game drive. We'll explore the park's forested areas, inhabited by monkeys and African elephants; the freshwater lake, where flamingos laze along the shores; and the open savannah, where lions stalk their prey.

Dinner and overnight at Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge.

Day 6: Ngorongoro - Arusha

After breakfast, we return to Arusha for lunch. We'll arrive in time for late afternoon flights or an overnight in the city.
