Day-by-Day Programme

Day 1: Nairobi - Nanyuki - Mountain Log Cabin

The breeze whipping through our hair, we depart modern Nairobi for one of the world's oldest challenges: the 3 million-year-old Mount Kenya, the country's tallest mountain and source of the nation's name. The stately mountain, an ancient stratovolcano, surges upward to form dulled crests, its peaks eroded by thousands of years of ice.

After a stopover in Nanyuki for lunch, we arrive at the base of our adversary. Poles and boots and gear at the ready, we begin our ascent via the dry and challenging Sirimon Trail. This route approaches the mountain from the northwest, climbing into mountain rainforest that sings with the buzz of life. A 3-4 hour walk brings us to the Met station where we will spend the night in the Mountain log cabins.

A good day for acclimatization for we will be sleeping at an altitude of 3,050m. A short hike is taken in the afternoon to gain and loose altitude.

Dinner and Overnight in the Mountain log cabins.

Day 2: Mount Kenya

A hearty breakfast prepares us for today's hike through Mount Kenya's moorlands. Here, the valleys are shallower and flatter, forming gentle U's – cradles for high-altitude plant and animal life. We'll traverse the Liki North and Makinder Valleys, which treat your eyes and camera lens to spectacular views of the Tereri and Sendeo peaks. The mercury drops as we ascend ever higher, but today's 6-7 hours of exertion will keep you warm and toasty with the packed lunch provided en-route in your mountaineering gear.

Dinner and overnight at Teleki Lodge (4,200m)

Day 3: Mount Kenya

Crawl out of your sleeping bag for a welcome cup of morning tea. Shake off the chill – did you ever think you'd encounter snow on the Equator? – after breakfast and with help of your guide, gear up for today's exhilarating challenge and ascend to the third highest peak climbing the summit of Point Lenana (16,355 feet/4,985 metres above sea level). Lenana is Mount Kenya's third-highest peak, eclipsed only by Batian (17,057 feet/5,199 metres) and Nelion (17,021 feet/5,188 metres).

Look up, and you'll see Lenana just ahead – it's the triangular point looming overshadowing our current position. It may look imposing but don't worry, the summit's rocky trails and snowy paths make for one of the mountain's easier ascents. When we reach the top, rejoice! Take a victory photo at the Mount Lenana sign, and spend a few moments absorbing the infinite panoramas that surround you. Your eyes slide past the majestic Nelion and Batian peaks, settling on Mount Keyna National Park at your feet, its glacial lakes glinting in the sunlight.

A few minutes break then proceed 6 hours down to Met Station for overnight (3050m).

Day 4: Chogoria - Nairobi

Breakfast preps us for our 6-8 hour descent toward Chogoria town. En route, we'll weave through verdant rainforest, where lichen drip from every surface and rosewood trees decorate the landscape. At the base of the trail, a bamboo forest wows with grasses up to 40 feet (12 metres high). The 20-mile path between the hiking trail and the town of Chogoria inspires wonder; in contrast from the mountainous moonscapes of Mount Kenya's upper reaches, this lively forest makes way for safari ants, elephants, leopards and buffalo.

After we arrive in the town of Chogoria, we'll drive back to Nairobi, arriving in late afternoon.
