Day-by-Day Programme

Besides water, tourism is the life-blood of many countries in Southern and East Africa, and by embarking on one of the greatest adventures of your life you will be making a direct contribution to the health and welfare of a large sector of the population.  Conservation is expensive, and without tourists there would be no conservation initiatives to protect Africa’s greatest assets, her people and her wildlife.  By choosing eco-friendly Lodges or Camps that are actively involved in conservation projects, you can rest assured that your tourist dollars will be channeled back into preserving the great African wilderness for future generations.

Day 1: Nairobi - Samburu

On arrival at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi you will be met by our representative and guide who will be able to answer any questions you may have about your safari, as he transfers you to Wilson Airport for your domestic scheduled flight to Samburu, along the Northern frontier of Kenya.

Your scheduled flight is about 45 minutes and once you touch down in Samburu your guide will be waiting to drive you to the Lodge. Along the way you will get your first taste of what a game drive in this fabulous wilderness, which forms part of the West Gate Conservancy, can deliver!

On arrival at the lodge a warm Kenyan welcome awaits you, and then it is time for lunch!  After lunch you will have some time to settle into your superb tented accommodation before the afternoon game drive.

Sasaab is situated on the rocky banks above the Ewaso Nyiro River with the most spectacular view of the wilderness.  Luxurious and very exclusive, the nine Moroccan-styled rooms feature enormous open-air bathrooms and a private plunge pool.  Have a refreshing dip and watch the passing parade from your private deck overlooking the river.  The expansive views across the Laikipia Plateau toward the jagged peaks of Mount Kenya are quite breath-taking.

Eco tourism is the very important at Sasaab, where conservation, community and tourism stand side by side.  Sasaab’s efforts in the Eco tourism sector have been recognized and the Lodge has been awarded the coveted “Eco Tourism Kenya” Gold Eco Rating certification for the last 3 years in a row! In addition, the Lodge was awarded the Eco Warriors Award for Community Investment Partnership of the Year for 2014.

Sasaab utilizes solar power for lighting and water heating, and the buildings have been built using sustainably obtained local stones and palm thatching, and the beige canvas sides blend perfectly into the environment. They have their own garden which produces much of the wonderful fresh vegetables and salads that will form part of your meals, and the Lodge supports the Ewaso Lion Project, which is focused on protecting the dwindling numbers of Lions in Africa.

Every moment of pampering and world-class hospitality you enjoy at Sasaab comes with a great “feel good” factor!

Dinner and overnight at Sasaab Lodge.

Day 2 & 3: Samburu

Sasaab Lodge has a whole host of exciting activities in store for you, and there is never a dull moment; you may have to actually set aside some time to enjoy your fabulous private deck and plunge pool!

The line-up starts with two game drives per day, including a night drive which is a wonderful addition you can only enjoy on private conservancies.  There are also some rather novel ways of seeing the wildlife and you may be surprised to see a line of Camels waiting to take you into the heart of the wilderness.  Sasaab also offers bush walks, bush breakfasts and truly spectacular sundowners from a viewpoint high above the plains and river.  To learn more about the culture of the local people, the Samburu guides will be happy to take you on a visit to a typical village to see how these pastoral people have lived for generations.

The wildlife is pretty amazing here and in addition to the Big Four (unfortunately there are no longer any Rhinos in the Samburu area)  you can also be on the lookout for the Special Five, some rather rare animals seldom seen outside of this area – Beisa Oryx, Reticulated Giraffe, Grevy’s Zebra, Gerenuk and Somali Ostrich.

Dinner and overnight at Sasaab Lodge.

Day 4: Samburu - Ol Pejeta

After breakfast at the camp your guide will be waiting to drive you to Ol Pejeta for the remainder of your safari.  The drive takes around four hours and is very scenic, offering breath-taking views of the Kenyan Northern circuit and distant Mount Kenya.  You will arrive at Sweetwaters Serena Camp in time for lunch.

After lunch you can spend a little time exploring your new camp before preparing for your afternoon game drive.  There are a total of 39 charming East-African style safari tents, all with serene décor, beautiful en-suite bathrooms and a private verandah with seating for relaxing or star-gazing.

Ol Pejeta Conservancy receives regular nominations as the best Private Conservancy for their enduring commitment to Eco Tourism. Sweetwaters Serena Camp continues this theme, using only sustainable local materials for their buildings and doing their utmost to reduce the impact of their footprint on the pristine wilderness of Ol Pejeta.  They do this by using inverter systems to reduce their use of diesel for power generation, and have an integrated recycling program for glass, plastics, paper as well as waste products.

The Camp supports the local community in a myriad of ways, from providing employment to subsidizing medical care and education, to helping the local community to earn money from cultural visits and the sale of their crafts.

When it comes to Wildlife, Ol Pejeta and Sweetwaters Serena Camp are at the forefront of several vital conservation projects, the most famous of which are their work in Rhino and Chimpanzee conservation.

Ol Pejeta has been intimately involved in a desperate struggle to save the Northern White Rhino from extinction; prior to 2009 this species, (which is believed to be an entirely different species, rather than a sub-species of the more common Southern and Northern White Rhino), was completely extinct in the wild, and the only 6 surviving animals lived in a zoo in the Czech Republic.

In 2009 four of these extremely precious animals were transferred to Ol Pejeta, where it was hoped that the excellent endemic environment would be conducive to breeding.  Sadly, one of the males died (of natural causes) in October 2014, which has been a great blow to their conservation efforts.  However, Ol Pejeta is still the only place in Africa where you have a chance of spotting one of the world’s most rare animals, and you will leave with the great satisfaction of knowing that your visit has contributed to the drive to re-introduce these animals back into the wilds of Africa.

However, Rhinos are just the tip of the iceberg, and the Conservancy does a great deal more, including wildlife monitoring, land management and continued wildlife research.

Today the fun starts with your first afternoon game drive and the opportunity to get a glimpse of one of the 96 Black Rhinos that live in Ol Pejeta, in its natural environment – the highlight of any visit!   All the other members of the Big Five and an amazing density of other wildlife are also out there to thrill you.  If you are back in time, watch a magnificent African sunset from the Rhino Bar, which overlooks the water hole.

Dinner and overnight at Sweetwaters Serena Camp.

Day 5: Ol Pejeta

You have the whole day to take advantage of the many activities in store for visitors to Sweetwaters Serena Camp and you don’t want to waste a moment!  We suggest you start the day with an early wake –up call so that you can enjoy a morning game drive as they animals become active.  After breakfast, (which could be served in the bush), you can go on a Nature walk, visit the Chimpanzee Sanctuary or just relax around the pool.  The Camp can arrange for a night drives at an extra cost, which is a wonderful experience that will give you the chance to see a number of shy nocturnal animals and possibly even a Leopard on the hunt.

Dinner and overnight at Sweetwaters Serena Camp.

Day 6: Ol Pejeta – Nairobi

After breakfast, it is time to say goodbye to your new friends as you check out and begin your journey to Nairobi.  The drive takes just over 3 hours and you will cross the Equator en-route!  On arrival in Nairobi your guide will either take you to your Nairobi Hotel or transfer you to the airport for your next flight back home.
