Day-by-Day Programme

Marvellous Meru awaits you!  In addition to big herds of Elephants, vibrant and diverse bird life and a solid complement of predators, Meru is one of the few wilderness reserves in Africa where it is still possible to have a close encounter with one of the world’s most endangered animals, the Rhino!  Come and experience it all on an authentic Big Five Kenya safari in Meru National Park.

Day 1: Get ready for the first day of your Meru National Park adventure!

Your Africa Point guide will be on hand to give you a warm Kenyan welcome on your arrival at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi.  Your guide will be happy to tell you about Nairobi and answer any travel questions you may have as you transfer to Wilson Domestic Airport for your scheduled flight to Meru National Park at 0900hrs.

If you are already in Nairobi your guide will meet you at your hotel for the transfer.

Flight time to Meru National Park is approximately 90mins.  On arrival at the Meru Airstrip you will be greeted by your local guide and transferred to Meru Offbeat Camp, your home from home for the next three nights.  The journey from the airstrip to Meru Offbeat Camp will give you your first taste of the wonderful wildlife you can expect to see over the next couple of days.

On arrival at Meru Offbeat Camp you will be served lunch and have some time to settle into your comfortable “under-canvas” accommodation before you set off on your first afternoon game drive.

After your first game drive there will be time to freshen up before drinks and dinner.

Fall asleep in your large comfortable bed to the magical sounds of the African bush.

Dinner and overnight at Meru Offbeat Camp.

About the Camp:

Meru Offbeat Camp is situated in an elevated location overlooking the beautiful riverine forest of the Bisanadi River in the Bisanadi National Reserve, which adjoins Meru National Park.

Offbeat camp is small and very personal – there are just 6 comfortable, authentic Kenya-style safari tents, all with en-suite bathrooms, private balconies and endless views over the river and the many animals that are drawn to it.

One of the tents is perfect for families and consists of two inter-connecting bedrooms (sleeping up to 5) with a shared bathroom. There is a central dining tent, a swimming pool, library and sitting area overlooking the river.

Day 2 & 3: Two full days to explore Meru National Park

Meru National Park is pure Big Five territory – there are large numbers of Elephant, Buffalo, Lion, Leopard and Rhino, as well as very good numbers of Giraffe, Zebra, Water Buck and many more.  The Park is also extremely richly endowed with bird life, and the bonus is a lack of other tourists!

Make the most of your Meru experience by requesting an early wake-up call and taking advantage of the early morning game drive, probably your best opportunity to see a variety of wildlife on the move.  Offbeat camp treats visitors to super bush breakfasts, freshly prepared in the middle of the Meru wilderness!

After the morning game drive you will return to camp to relax during the hottest hours of the day.  Enjoy a dip in the pool, do some bird watching around the camp or go on a guided walk to learn all about the vegetation and the smaller creatures that you would miss on a game drive.

One of the highlights of your two days in Meru is a visit to the Rhino Sanctuary, where more than 60 endangered Black and White Rhinos have been relocated.  Enjoy the experience of seeing them close-up in their natural habitat, and enjoy the knowledge that fees generated by guests are exclusively used to ensure their continued survival here.

A few of the other activities you can look forward to are fishing excursions in the rivers, late-afternoon “sundowner” drinks in superb settings within the park, and optional (an extra fee applies) cultural visits to local villages.

Back at Camp after a busy day of Big Five sightings you can enjoy the unique experience of gathering around a camp-fire with other like-minded people to swop wildlife stories and socialize before you go to dinner.

Dinner and overnight at Meru Offbeat Camp.

Day 4: Depart Meru National Park

After a final breakfast at the camp it is time to bid farewell to your hosts and guides and transfer back to the airstrip for your flight to Nairobi.

Your scheduled flight arrives at Wilson Domestic Airport at approx. 12.30hrs, after which your guide will transfer you to a local restaurant for lunch, before you move on to Jomo Kenyatta International for your flight home.  Alternatively, if you are staying on in Nairobi your guide will transfer you to your hotel.
