Selous National Park

General Information
This is officially the crème de la crème. It is the largest game reserve in the world and also has the coveted position off second largest nature site in the world! It practically covers a considerable portion of Tanzania. The reserve derives its name (pronounced seloo) from conservationist Frederick Courtney Selous; a jack-of-all-trades, he was also a hunter, explorer and author.

The reserve is in a remote place ad is accessible more easily by air. Known as Tanzania's untouched treasure, the reserve provides travelers a most unique experience.

Getting There
It is recommended that you fly to the park from Dar es Salaam, which is an 8- hour drive away.

Major Attraction
Selous is host to a wide variety of animals; the most striking are the wild dogs. One third of all the world's wild dogs are found here. Selous offers them boundless space to roam. This fact also applies to animals like elephants, hippos, crocodiles and buffalos. In moderation are leopards, lions, giraffes, baboons and zebras. Bird life in the park is also in abundance: fish eagle, African skimmer, waders and heron

The dominant feature of Selous is the Rufigi River, the largest water catchment in the region as well as the bloodline of the reserve. This river has also got volcanic hot springs in some places. It is host to s large number of aquatic and bird life. Hippos and crocodiles can be seen basking along its shores. The view of the river is breathtaking especially at place known as Stiggler's Gorge, which is where the great Ruaha River meets the Rufigi River.

Activities in the reserve include walking safaris that should be done with an armed guard, game viewing on boats, bird watching, fishing, photography etc.

Vegetation in the park varies from grassy woodlands and plains to rocky outcrops.
