Ruaha National
Park
General Information
Known as a birdwatchers paradise this is one of Tanzania's least
accessible parks. Found in the southern Tanzania safari circuit,
this park is the second largest covering an area of 10, 300 kilometers
square. The park is derives its name from the Ruaha River, which
flows on the eastern borders.
The park is located in a remote place and is therefore
unexplored. This has the dual effect of giving privacy whilst offering
the unique experience sought after by most travelers. The park's
wilderness stretches far beyond where the eye can see.
Getting There
The park can be accessed from Dar es Salaam, which is a ten-hour
drive away, or a half hour flight away. The airstrip is at nearby
Msembe.
Major Attractions
Like most of Tanzania's parks, this parks boast of a wide array
wildlife, plant life, bird life as well as aquatic life. Some of
the animals that can be observed here are elephants- thought to
be highly concentrated in this area than anywhere else in Tanzania.
Of great fascination is how the elephants move together
in herds grazing the lands and quenching their thirst. Lions, leopards,
the rare wild dog, jackals, hyena hunt the lands for zebra, antelopes-
the three varieties sable, roan and kudu- and buffalos.
The great Ruaha River and its mini waves are home
to hippos and crocodiles. The bird species in the park is phenomenal
many of which can be viewed along the riverbeds.
Vegetation in the park is made up of miombo woodland,
acacia grassland and baobab tree. Visitors can take part in hiking
safaris as well as day walks to capture the hidden beauty of this
park.
