Mikumi
National Park
General Information
This is officially Tanzania's third largest park. Beyond the park's
western border is a village from which the park derives its name.
The word 'mikumi' is Swahili for the Borassus palm,
a plant that is widely grown in the village hence its name.
The park is nestled between the Uluguru ranges in
the east and the Lumango Mountains in the southwest. The park is
very popular in Tanzania and is where students of ecology and conservation
go to be enlightened in this park. The Mkata River Hood Plain is
the park's main feature.
Getting There
The park is 288km from Dar es Salaam and can be reached easily by
road, thus making it a popular destination for the locals.
Major Attraction
Within the park is a wide variety of animals; tree- climbing lions,
giraffes, buffalos, elephants, leopards, hippos, zebras, impalas,
pythons, wild- dogs etc.
The park is also host to bird species, estimated
to be 300 in total. Hippo pools punctuate the park, which adds to
the pleasant viewing. The park borders two other parks, Udzungwa
and Selous Game Reserve; these three locations make up a good safari
circuit.
All these can be observed from a number of viewing
towers within the park. Vegetation in the park is miombo woodland.
