Mahale
National Park
General Information
Mahale is mostly known for its huge number of plant species- more
than 500 plant species has been identified. Covering an area of
1613 kilometers square, this park is the most remote and beautiful
of all Tanzania's national parks. The park is located in the west
of Tanzania on the shores of lake Tanganyika- the world's longest
lake.
The park is mostly known for its huge primate population.
Sightings of these are more regular and prolonged. These groups
of primates are the chimpanzees in specific and the last surviving
of these are thought to be concentrated in this park. If you are
after a real African adventure in the jungles then this is the place
to go as the park has no roads, the only way to access it is by
air or by boat. Once in the park, exploring is done on foot.
Getting There
Charter aircrafts can be boarded in Dar es Salaam, Arusha or Kigoma.
Within the Park is an airstrip although recently a charter incorporating
the parks Mahale, Katari and Gombe was set up. Boats come from Kigoma
to Zambia at Mugambo, the northern boundary of the park.
Major Attractions
Chimpanzees and their antiques would have to be the main star attraction
of the park. Hikes to their hideouts are carried out. These hikes
do not require any expertise but physical fitness will come in handy.
Other animals found in the park are lions, leopards,
kudu, eland, buffalo, and monkeys. The bird species in the park
is prolific and include the crested lake, green sand piper. Fish
can also be found swimming in the waters of Lake Tanganyika.
All the above can be traced by indulging in walking
safaris, snorkeling, fishing, bird watching, climbing. The Nkungwe
Mountain peaking at 2,460 m dictates vegetation in the park. In
this respect vegetation is characterized by miombo woodland, riverine
forest, grassland and bamboo.
