1. General Information
Meru National park is one of Kenya's prominent parks
located approximately 350km from Nairobi and was opened in 1968.
The parks covers an area of approximately 875sq km and has diverse
vegetation that range from open plains, riverbanks dotted with palms,
woodlands at 3000ft. It has small streams and about 13 rivers passing
through it all destined to reach the Tana River. The terrain at
this park ranges between 1000 and 3400 meters above sea level. It
is home to the largest number of buffaloes.
For accommodation,
there are 8 special campsites, 1 public campsite, meru mulika lodge,
leopard rock banda and K.W.S self help banda. Meru National park
deserves to be visited but it solitude bio-diversity makes it a
certain destination for the discriminating and the environmentally
conscious visitor.
2. Getting There
You can get there by road. It is approximately 41/2 hours drive
from the city center. The routes to this park are Nyeri-Nanyuki-Meru
or through Embu using the all weather road direct from Nairobi.
3. Major Attractions
Visitors to this park have the chance to visit the grave where"
Elsa" the lioness was buried. They also have a chance to view
wildlife including leopards, cheetahs, buffallos, elephants, rhinos,
the rare Grevys zebra, Bruchells zebra lesser kudu, duiker, dikdik,
hippos, crocodiles. They also get a chance spot different bird species
like pteres finfoot, pels fishing owl, kingfisher roller, bee-eater,
ostrich, and starling weaverbirds. There is also spectacular view
of Mt. Kenya and around 13 rivers that cut across the park.
Visitors are allowed to fish for catfish and barbus
along the Tana River and on the campsite. Journey to the Tana River
involves a descent from 675m at Meru Mulika lodge about 294meters
at the river. Despite the heat, the journey is a truly wonderful
wilderness experience. Adamson Falls must also be visited. If you
are lucky, you get a chance to spot the Hyrax or roc rabbit, which
share ancestry with dugongs and elephants They live in family groups
with one male and up to twenty females and their young ones. Other
parks nearby worth visiting are Bisanadi, Kora, Rahole and Mwingi
National reserve.
