What
is a 'safari'?
The
term safari is swahili for journey. It is originally from the Arabic
“safara” meaning travel. In most cases, the term is used to refer
to voyages to Africa, especially for big game hunting and wildlife
viewing.
How
do I travel to Africa?
There
are numerous airlines operating direct flights to major cities and
towns in Africa from Europe, United States, and Asia. Africa Point
will arrange all your flights within Africa. Fore more information
visit out Africa
Flights web page.
What
travel documents do I need?
In
addition to your valid passport, visas are required for most African
destinations. You should check with the embassy or consulate of the
country you are visiting to get more information.
When
is the best time to go on safari to Africa?
Africa
can be visited throughout the year, but the period between July and
August is the best time to go on an Africa
safari. During this period, animals move in large numbers in
search of water and pasture making it easier to go on game viewing
adventures. If you happen to visit East Africa during this period,
you can have the opportunity of witnessing the Great Migration at the
Serengeti
(Tanzania)
and Masai
Mara National Reserve (Kenya).
What
should I pack? This
depends on the country you are visiting and the season of the year.
Temperatures in winter are generally mild but can become considerably
cooler in the evening. It is therefore advisable to pack multiple
layers of clothing to ensure you stay comfortable on afternoon walks
and game drives. As a rule, always remember to carry a hat, sunscreen
and bug repellent.
Are
there any medical precautions? Most
countries require advance inoculations for yellow fever for those
travelling from yellow fever-infected countries. But generally you
are advised to consult your local doctor for information on malaria
and the latest health precautions. Those on prescription medication
should ensure to carry adequate supply to last the duration of your
stay and a copy of your prescription(s).
What
kinds of animals will I see?
Africa
is a wildlife-rich continent. It is possible to see large animals - a
whole variety of them including giraffes, oryx, buffallo, rhino,
lion, cheetah and more. A special thrill is in store if your safari
coincides with the annual wildebeest migration. You'll see thunderous
herds of wildebeest and zebra, totaling more than 1 million,
stretching across the horizon. On their trail follow the predators
the big cats, and the scavengers hyenas, jackals and vultures ready
for an annual feast.
How
close will I get to the animals?
You
can get as close to the animals as possible if travelling in
protected game reserves. Many of the animals in these parks do not
fear vehicles. Your driver will advise you on the the best viewing
distance.
How
is the African Weather? Africa
has a pleasant weather throughout the year. This is due to the
continent's high elevation (3000 to 8000 feet above sea level) and
proximity to the equator. The dry seasons, July through October, and
December through March, are the best time to go on Africa safari.
During this time you may expect to find the greatest concentrations
of animals because they will congregate around the remaining water
holes. The rainy season occurs in the month of April, May, and
November. During this time the landscape is beautifully green, and
there are fewer tourists. The animals are more dispersed, so will be
harder to spot.
Can
I use a credit card to pay for my safari?
Visa,
Mastercard and American Express are accepted in most tourist
facilities.
Is
a safari dangerous? Africa
safaris are always safe, but you should stay within the
boundaries of your lodge or in your van. Your guide and driver know
what is, and is not, safe. Do not wear flashy jewelry, hold onto
your camera bag and purse, beware of con people and never walk
alone in the city at night. Avoid wearing money belts because they
can easily be cut off from the rear.
