Explore the picturesque Lamu Island, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The ancient town once hosted traders, invaders and rulers; now it's your turn to discover this startlingly beautiful island.
Close your eyes and imagine a powdery beach of bleached sand, so white it glints in the sunlight. Envision a sparkling but indecisive ocean that can't choose whether to take on transparent aquamarine hues or the vast depth of sapphire blue. White sailboats are the only sight to break the horizon, where the Indian Ocean falls into infinity. Breathe in the salty sea breeze. Sniff for the aroma of grilled lobster, stewing coconut and sizzling fish. Listen for the melodious rhythms of the Lamu Archipelago.
Now open you're eyes. You're here, on Lamu Island. A brief flight from Nairobi transports you to this other world, one of spectacular vistas in every shade of blue, green and white. Lamu Island redefines your idea of utopia.
Dinner and overnight at Kipungani Explorer.
Today is dedicated to relaxation, luxury and multi-cultural Lamu, the main town and primary trade centre for Lamu Island. This historic destination, the oldest inhabited town in Kenya at more than 700 years old, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, thanks to its long and colourful history. Today you'll walk the streets of an island once populated by Chinese traders, Portuguese invaders, Omani rulers and, finally, Swahili settlers.
Fall in love with Swahili architecture, and the lively culture and hospitality of this East African settlement. Explore narrow streets by donkey or bike, or take to your own two feet. Meander along the island's pristine beaches and take a dip in the Indian Ocean. Enjoy paradise.
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner and overnight at Kipungani Explorer.
The morning is yours to lounge at the hotel and explore the deserted 8.7-mile (14-kilometre) beach. Crack a book in the shade of a palm tree, or schedule an indulgent massage beachside.
Mid-afternoon, we'll depart on a flight back to Nairobi, where you'll arrive in time for an evening flight or overnight in the big city.
